Day 13: In which we arrive at this weeks' school, haggle with localcraftsmen and face an ant infestation

After breakfast on the beach at our beautiful lake side campsite, we set off for our first day at the Malawian school. After a very bumpy 15 minute drive we arrived at the school we are spending the rest of the week at and were greeted by over 100 excited children. We led the biggest hokey kokey yet and some other songs. We were then allocated a group: grade 5, 6 or 7 pupils and set to work with them. In ARC's group the Grade 6s required patience due to their constant parroting of instructions. KC enjoyed getting to know her Grade 7s and sharing football and music talk with them. AS was impressed with her group's confidence and EB was surprised at their advanced English skills, requiring  a quick adaptation of the planned activity. After lessons we saw the "library" - where the books are displayed on long tables because the only bookshelf is shabby and cannot fit all the books. We helped to sort out the books ready for the bookshelf we will be providing the school with by the end of the week. We can't wait to see what it'll look like on Friday. As we left the school the children were tucking into the porridge we had paid for- we were impressed with their resourcefulness in using seed pods as spoons. When we got back to our campsite we enjoyed meeting some local craftsmen traders and admiring their handmade goods- MG haggled to pay in Guide badges, while EN was ruthless in her bargaining tactics, and EOK finally managed to get updated on the football transfers by chatting to the craftsmen. We then had sweet and sour chicken for dinner, battled the ants out of our tents and went to bed.
